See also a letter from the Rural Peace campaign organizers. Go to the latest Comments & Discussion page of this website. Arrangements are well in hand for Wood Ditton's annual Church Fete at Parsonage Farm, to be held on Saturday 7th June.
The gates will open at 12 pm and a BBQ will be available from the start; the official opening will be carried out at 1 pm by the present Newmarket Town Mayor, Councillor Bill Burch.
It's Derby Day and the fete will have its own Derby theme. Ladies are invited to dress for the occasion, there will be a competition for the best dressed 'jockey' and we will have our own Derby race with an opportunity to bet on your chosen horse.
All the favourite stalls will be there plus some new ones. By popular request the main event of the afternoon will be the return of the Newmarket School of Dance. It is nice to think that Wood Ditton and other local villages are quiet places generally free from the sort of crimes that affect the towns. Unfortunately this is no longer so and there has been a spate of local burglaries. Police presence is thinly spread but good Neighbourhood Watch is a proven effective way of reducing this risk. Cover in the villages varies from good to non-existent and it just needs more public spirited villagers to get involved.
The East Cambridgeshire Neighbourhood Watch Association is there to help and has a website http://eastcambsnhw.google pages.com/home Cambridgeshire Walks - 50 walks in the county with maps www.walkingincambridgeshire.co.uk/Have you ever wondered what life was like in Wood Ditton before, during and after World War II. 1. Never open e-mail attachments, even from trusted sources, unless you are sure they are genuine, ie. the text in the main body explains the attachment.
2. Beware of clicking on any links from or to dodgy sites, these sometimes pretend to be from reputable organizations, such as banks, Inland Revenue, Amazon or E-Bay. Even the 'No thank you' or 'close' x button can be a trap. Try pressing Control + W to get rid of a doubtful site.
Spam is a curse of the internet and much of it is being sent out by innocent users whose computers have been hijacked by implanted programmes. If your computer is running very slowly or is acting in other strange ways you could be a victim. Running a virus scan with a good anti-virus programme should show up any lurking intruder.
Also please do not pass on any chain-mail type emails containing dire warnings about supposed viruses that will wreck your computer defrost your freezer or curdle your cream. They are invariably hoaxes and at best clog the internet. Even the well intentioned jokes or funny story mass emails can be used as a source to harvest email addresses, resulting in still more spam.
