Hello, my ancesters come from Kirtling & Woodditton and I am trying to trace the COLLIN name back. Benjamin Collin from Woodditton married Rhoda Woollard in Kirtling on 30th August 1807 this is the Collin family I`m trying to trace, the name may have been spelt COLLING as I believe Benjamin`s parents are John & Hannah Colling which I believe is a mistake. Can anyone help thanks.

14th April from Peter Golding
I have been researching the Golding family recently and have made contact with a 5th cousin by the name of Choat. We originate from the Hundon/Cowlinge area circa 1830. Choat has a relation-John Chapman who lived in Wood Ditton and married in August 1955,there was also a mention of a William Chapman in 1879,the family went to Pyrford ,Surrey in 1891.John Choat would be pleased for any leads to the Chapmans. There is also a reference in his information to a Woollard who married an ada Chapman circa 1890.They are descended from a Mary Choat.I will pass on any information to John Choat who lives in Hampshire.
Any information, please e-mail the Webmaster

I am currently researching my wife's family tree and have discovered that her father's ancestors originally came from Woodditton and Stetchworth. The family name is STIGWOOD.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who may be related to the Stigwoods or has any information on the family that they could share with me.
Please contact me on either brian.williams@marshallaerospace.com or brintray@aol.com.

Hi
The Wright family had numerous generations born in Wood Ditton between 1597 and 1795. I am attempting to find where they lived. They were closely related to the Wrights of Fulbourn at Hall Farm and evidence suggests they were descended from the Wrights of Kilverstone Hall, Thetford. They appear to have been farmers/yeomen and related occupations, by the 18th and 19th centuries the main group was in the Shelfords as farmers, blacksmiths and publicans.
Anyone or any Wrights in Wood Ditton who could help me in this quest would be greatly appreciated regards and very intersting site Donald Macer Wright

I am a descendant of the Claydon family from Wood Ditton. My grandfather, Charles Edward Claydon was born in Dullingham in 1886.Charles and his wife Edith Annie (nee Stinton) had 9 children. My late father, James Edward Claydon, was the second youngest. He was born in Bournemouth, Hants in 1920. The last surviving child, Eric, sadly passed away on the 1st November 2005. He was a much loved Uncle who, despite living in Bournemouth and Poole all his life, never forgot his frequent visits to Wood Ditton, Dullingham, Stetchworth and Newmarket as a child and fondly remembered his family roots.
We often visit East Anglia and are planning to move to Suffolk later this year. It would be lovely to meet up with anyone who is related or who may remember the family.
Janet Boniface ( nee' Claydon) E-mail brian@woodbridge356.wanadoo.co.uk
Claydons certainly lived in Wood Ditton at least until the nineteen fifties and the name is common in local villages.

Hi just visited your brilliant website. As a 'Cates' descendant I found it fascinating. The recent message from Kylie refers to Iris Cook. I think she must have been my mother Ruth's best childhood friend. Sadly my mother is no longer around but she told us how they would get into many scrapes together.
Does anyone remember old John Cates (my grandad) who would sit in'his' chair at the Blackbirds playing dominoes?
Lesley Keith
John (known as Jack) Cates is well remembered by the older village people, he was still tending his large garden in his early nineties and claimed he never had a day's illness. He worked as a horsekeeper for farmer Stanley Hensby and his social life revolved around the Three Blackbirds pub where, you are quite right, he had his regular seat and puffed his old pipe. 2nd February 2006.
Dear Sir I am researching my wifes family name Prentice For many years Ernest Prentice was stud groom at Brook Stud, Cheveley, Near Newmarket, where I believe they lived from the early 1900s onwards. Mr & Mrs Prentice brought up 11 children in the Village. His son Jack took over the Stud Groom job after WW2. and Ernest died in 1963.
Is there any where I can get detailed information on Cheveley and Brook Stud. The family details I should be able to get from Church Records, but info. on the Village I am most interested in
Thank you John Gabbey

26th January 2006 In response to Kylie Daines message on your website, I would like to mention that my maiden name was Daines and I have a whole host of Daines family (obviously), names and am wondering, we must be joined up somewhere in the long list perhaps.
The name of this respondent was not given, but I can pass on any messages (Webmaster)

From the Wells Family (USA Upon looking at the web page for the Church of St Mary the Virgin. I came across a stained glass window shown at http://www.wood-ditton.org.uk/win4.htm on the south wall of the church dedicated to Thomas Kilburne church warden in 1632. I am a descendant of Thomas living in the United States. The image of the window is too low of resolution to be read. Several members of the family have mentioned the church in Wood Ditton over the years and the window mentioned. Not being able to visit the church any time soon, I am asking for your assistance in obtaining a high resolution image of this window. If at all possible would you please e-mail a higher resolution image of the window dedicated to Thomas Kilburne to me at the e-mail address below. Thank you for your assistance. Sam Wells wellsfamily7.3@netzero.com
A higher resolutiion picture of the Kilburne window has now been included. The wording is:
"To the Glory of God and in memory of Thomas Kilburne*   Churchwarden of this Parish in 1632
This window is erected by his descendents in America in 1903"
*It is not clear whether the spelling is Kilburne or Kilbourne (Webmaster).

My ancestors come from Wooditton, Cheveley and Kirtling. I am currently doing our family tree and have managed to go back to early 1700's on the Daines side, but am stuck with the Cook/Cates side! My maternal grandmother is Ida May Cook b1914 (sister of Herbert Cook and Iris Cook) who was born in Wooditton. If anyone has any useful info please let me know. Thanx

Message:   Early in September we're hoping to spend a few days in
Suffolk. My grandparents, Florence (nee Elger)and William
Lorking married in Wood Ditton in July 1902 and lived in
Mill Road Stetchworth and then Park Cottages, Newmarket,
moving from there to London in 1916. They had four
children who would have all attended local schools. My
mother was the third daughter and they had a younger
 brother, Eldred.

We believe that at one time my gerandfather worked for a
Mr Harrison at, possibly, Aislabie Stud.

I know my parents did return from Hoddesdon to visit
Stetchworth years later so I expect that the four
postcards I have of the village date from that visit.

My nephew has got very interested in our family history
and thinks that William's father was George William
Lorking who was born in Sturmer, Essex in 1846 and married
in Risbridge in 1866. His spouse was Elizabeth Ellen
Eldred, born in Sturmer in 1847. It's all so intriguing.

If anyone can suggest where we can find out anything about
the family when we venture into Suffolk. I'll be so
grateful. Am wondering about schools etc.

My email is brenda@mathews.fsworld.co.uk. and we live in

Message:   Hello wood-ditton.org.uk,

Thanks for the great website! As I'm sure many many people are, I am one of
the descendants of Wood Ditton Churchwarden Thomas Kilbourne, who
travelled from Wood Ditton to New England in 1635. Having recently become
a father, I started looking into the history of my name to tell my son, and the

whilst I busied myself with the washing - mail

emails Does anyone want a Secretaries job ? Rodney I
have updated myself on the Website and thank you for
keeping us together, you I am sorry that Beryl Woollard
had a fall and broke her hip, knowing Beryl she will be
soon running around again. I visited her on my last trip
to Woodditton, but she was out enjoying herself, Tony
entertained Joyce and me we ate at The Three Black Birds on
that day in June. Sadly I also missed Beryl's 90th
Birthday celebration because I was away on holiday. No
doubt she is now a 'hippy' like me. I can highly
reccomend new hips it rejuvinates the body. I would have
been up and dancing at the music evening. Please Tony give
my love to your Mum and I will make a point of a return
 visit soon.
I am still in two teirs of local Government and have put my
head on the block for next years County Elections
Hertfordshire County Council (again) If anyone feels like
canvassing in Rickmansworth its a lovely place for walking.
There is always a welcome here at 55 Beacon Way
Rickmansworth if anyone finds themselves in the locality.
My happy memories are still in Woodditton. For those of
you who remember me, I send my love. Hope to see Rodney
and Audrey soon - the promised Pub lunch. Love to all

Message:   Thanks for a great site. My husband's Ashby forebears
have entries in the 1891 census "part of Wood Ditton" at 8
Hill Terrace (Cheveley Road) and at 5 Sussex Cottages. It
is believed that Alfred Ashby fell on his pitchfork in an
oasthouse turning the hops between the census dates of
1881 and 1891. In 1881, he is recorded in Dullingham, and
in 1891 his widow his living with two sons in Wood
Ditton. I note in the publication "A Tanner Will Do" by
Rodney H. Vincent, several Varneys in Wood Ditton, and a
Hobbs in Newmarket. Reginald Ashby married an Annie
Elizabeth Varney, and it is possible that Annie Varney may
have been related to the Wood Ditton Varneys.

possible to find out who the photographer is and whether

I would like first to say how very much I enjoyed visiting
this site and reading about Wood Ditton and Saxon Street.

My husband and I have rented the Old Barn on Ditton Green,
and hope to move in at the beginning of September with our
son (currently 11 months) and 2 dogs.

We are thrilled to have found a house in such a lovely
village and very much look forward to meeting everyone.
Naturally, as soon as we knew we were renting in the
village we took the trouble to introduce ourselves to Paul
 at the Three Blackbirds!

If anyone can help me with information about child care for
my son, health club facilities, gardening tips, running
clubs, and anything you feel may be useful, please feel
free to email me at dorf15e@yahoo.com. I have not included
a phone number as we are currently living in Greece.

I will also be interested in volunteering my services in
the village if there are any areas that can use my
 (admittedly limited) talents!

We hope that anyone who would like to meet us will feel
free to drop by and say hello when we arrive in September.

 Yours truly,

Message:   Having spent a lovely week in the Newmarket/Cambridge area
(Easter week), ancestor hunting -we ended up at the 3
Blackbirds for a drink whilst enquiring about a Black
Brick farm in the area about 1891(Husband's Great
Grandfather was here on census - saying he was a
publican), we had seen on an old map that there had been a
brick yard in the area so we thought it was logical, and
one of my ancestors lived on a farm whilst his daughter
ran the pub that they had, so we didn't see anything wrong
with that either. However, this was a bad transcript and
it now turns out having got an enlarged copy of the 1891
census that my husband's Great Grandad was at the Black
Bird Inn in Ditton Green, is this the same as the three
Blackbirds?, and does anyone have an old photo of this
pub, or can someone send me a photo of the pub as it is
today to put with my research, as we didn't think it was
relevant to our search we didn't take one. He went on to
be publican of the Black Horse Inn, Newmarket High
Street. His name was George Bowler if anyone has any
information regarding him or his family I would be very
interested- wife Elizabeth and five children - George,
Maud, Alice, Arthur and Emily. Emily was born in the pub
and is my Husband's grandmother.thanks for any help

Well Done! Am trying to trace a George Waterloo Barnes who
I believe lived in Saxon Street or Woodditton about about
100 years ago or less? Any information would be great.
