General information

I would like to build an up to date list of services that are of value to the community. If you provide something, or more importantly if you have used a service yourself that you feel will be of use to others, please let me know by mailing here and I will update the site.
Let's populate this with useful information on pubs, restaurants, accommodation, tradesmen - anything that you think will be useful!

This page and it's links are currently being re-consrtucted. Some of the links may not work right now so please be patient. Thank you.

    Oil syndicate
Do you use oil for central heating? If so, the syndicate set up by Derek Bassett may be of interest to you. Contact Derek on 01638 730853 for more information. Also, see previous entries in the discussion archive
    here
The syndicate was started 3 years ago with the joining together of 10 residents. There are now in excess of 120 members resident in Woodditton and the surrounding villages. Members are contacted once a month during the winter between October and April and once during the summer in July. Orders are group together and local Suppliers asked to quote their best price. The order is then placed with the best priced Supplier. All participating members are notified who the Supplier is, the approximate delivery date and the price. Payment is made by the member direct to the Supplier. Minimum quantity is 500 Litres

  • Have you heard of Lyme Disease? This is being increasingly found in the UK and whilst it's treatment is normally very simple, if left untreated it can have appalling results - I personally have been left disabled as a result! The disease is spread to humans via ticks that frequently feed on deer and therefore this area is one of the UK's 'hot spots'. Spring and summer months are the times you are most at risk. For information on Lyme and more importantly what you can do to minimise your risk, see this external website by clicking here www.garsh.co.uk (a new window will open).

  • It is nice to think that Woodditton and other local villages are quiet places generally free from the sort of crimes that affect the towns. Unfortunately this is no longer so and there has been a spate of local burglaries. Police presence is thinly spread but good Neighbourhood Watch is a proven effective way of reducing this risk. Cover in the villages varies from good to non-existent and it just needs more public spirited villagers to get involved.
The East Cambridgeshire Neighbourhood Watch Association is there to help and has a website http://eastcambsnhw.google pages.com/home

  • Cambridgeshire Walks - 50 walks in the county with maps www.walkingincambridgeshire.co.uk/

  • Have you ever wondered what life was like in Woodditton before, during and after World War II. Rodney Vincent's book 'A Tanner Will Do' has been re-published as a new improved edition. For more details select here

  • For anyone interested in Woodditton's history the results of painstaking and detailed research are availabe from 'British History Online'. The site also covers Kirtling and Cheveley among other Cambridgeshire villages. Click this next link to go directly to the Woodditton entries British History Online, Woodditton

  • Keep your computer safe. You should have up to date anti-virus protection and a firewall but if nothing else, follow two cardinal rules to keep nasties away from your computer:
    1. Never open e-mail attachments, even from trusted sources, unless you are sure they are genuine, ie. the text in the main body explains the attachment.
    2. Beware of clicking on any links from or to dodgy sites, these sometimes pretend to be from reputable organizations, such as banks, Inland Revenue, Amazon or E-Bay. Even the 'No thank you' or 'close' x button can be a trap. Try pressing Control + W to get rid of a doubtful site.
Spam is a curse of the internet and much of it is being sent out by innocent users whose computers have been hijacked by implanted programmes. If your computer is running very slowly or is acting in other strange ways you could be a victim. Running a virus scan with a good anti-virus programme should show up any lurking intruder.
